Also extended the front mud flaps. Found they were to short and throwing rocks up between my cab and side steps. Around town wasn't to bad but every time I had to drive on the gravel to get home I cringed at the sound. They are long enough to flex back and fill the gapImageImage

Thanks mark. It is slowing the canopy progress extremly. I have stuff lined up ready to go on plus sheets back from the benders ready to be welded and more sheets ready to be cut out and get bent up but i cant grip the grinder, or fit a welding glove over my hand or pick up anything heavy :x :x Took it off today for a while and i dont thhink its near ready to come off thumb is still swallon and sore   After Deni i should be able to get stuck into it

Thought i would copy my canopy build over from new hilux. Its still a working project and slowly getting there
Couple months ago i started building a full aluminium jackoff gull wing canopy for the lux, but ended up trading that in on a cruiser. The aim was to build it in full alloy, beable to leave it fully setup and also one other little twist that will come along later ;) So far this is the build up

Base is made from 50x25x3mm rhs with 50x50x3mm angle to sit over the gunnels.

Image

Image

Frame is constructed out of 50x50x3mm rhs with the inside support legs being 33x33x3mm. Took abit on getting the angles right and working out the cuts but finally got it

Image

Image

Image

All ally chequer plate will be of 3mm. Welding the alloy with the mig took some getting used to. Cleanlyness is extremly important but after a littly practice i think ive figured it out
Image

First attempt at verticle up with the ally on the left hand side, wind the volts down and come out alot better on the right hand

Have marked out a few sheets that are going to the fab shop to be bent up on friday so i can start cladding it. Will have to order some more sheets in for finish the rest of the cladding but it will be taken to the shop to get the doors bent up as idk how the doors are actually supposed to sit so they can work it all out. Would work out alot cheaper if i marked it out tho. Costing about $5 per bend that i get done. Will update with progress as i go on. Open to any suggestions

Picked up a few cutouts of alloy that I had a local fab shop bend up was quoted $5 a bend depending on the difficulty come back at $50 for 20 bends   and every thing fits almost perfect. So my marking out actually turned out pretty good. There's about 100 bends in the whole canopy so I'll see how the rest go they really add up after a while.

Well had a go yesty of welding up some of the alloy sheets together and lets say nothing was going my way  ended up getting it together in the end just not quite how I wanted. Also went to order another 3 sheets of aluminium cheqeur plate and umm an extra $30 a sheet to what I was paying before    didn't really have choice so got them in today. Start cutting some more sheets out over the weekend. Image

Sent the rest of the corner pannels and top of the door skirts to the benders on friday. Was ment to pick them up today but apparently there bender was playing up friday and today  Also thanks to Mitch i have some little pressents in coming up to have a play around with

Not including the welder setup materials have cost $640.Thats 5 lengths or 50x25, 3 lengths of 33x3, 3 sheets of chequer plate and box of rivets. But still need to buy another 2 sheets of ally, legs and other stuff
Without the legs and the other major mod to it the shell should come in around $1300 at the end including labour for doors. So save a fair bit compared to buying a shell from a fabricator. But With legs, actuators, viynal, ally mesh, wiring, seals, hinges and few other things its probly gonna end up around the $3500-$4000 all up. See how it goes anyway

Yer it's slowly getting there, doors are almost ready to go on after a few mistakes with them  all quarter panels are mounted and welded. I stripped the Actuators, ready to be cut down. Been fiddling with there mounts abit tho. Hinges ready to be fixed.
Been thinking Im probly going to spray the whole thing the same colour silver as my rims. Suggestions for colour?

Yeah sounds and looks good mate. I'll have to check your rim colour out.

You can cut in a piece of PVC pipe to act as a limiter. So when the ram extends it stops against your preset PVC pipe.

I can but the canopy is only 970 tall and I need to fit them inside without them sticking out. Theres bugger all to cutting them down. Retapping the tie rods is the most time consuming thing. All up about 175mm to come off the barrels and a little less on the rod.

Am probly building a new steel tray at Xmas and will most likely spray it white. Did consider doing it silver then the canopy white but leaning towards white tray silver canopy
