80 series best 4wd of all time

Postby kyle300exc on Wed Jun 25, 2014 8:28 am

Reading a recent article in 4wd Action they have named the faithful 80 series as the best 4x4 of all time just ahead of the GQ. So well done to the 80 series owners out there.

Yep not much between the two in performance and capability just the 80 is finished off a lot better and has a more refined ride

Surely the GQ has a stronger drive line.

The GQ having a stronger drive line always amuses me. I drive with a lot of GQs, mainly cause they are a cheaper option and I can drive the same tracks they do. Yes the Patrol has a more positive LSD rear then the 80, but it is about the only advantage to a GQ over an 80. the rest of the difference is inside the vehicle, the ride, handling and over all comfort is just so much better. I find there is more room in an 80 compared to the GQs as well.

I think possibly where the GQ is at an advantage is in the cab chassis comparisons. The GQ with coiled rear has it over the average leaf 70 series cab / chassis off road. Downside is most people buy a ute because they need to carry a payload and your load carrying capacities are reduced. I've seen the coiled cabs fitted with air bags to resolve that issue.
Anyway wasn't meant to start a Nissan versus Toyota debate merely posting up a finding that 4wd action had come to. Ill check out what the runners up are tonight.

Yep every vehicle has their pros and cons and comes down to what compromise you are willing to make to what vehicle you get. The bride would like a 100 and I would love a 79DC at present all we can afford is an 80.

GQ's are great trucks, strong engine, gearbox diffs. But the 80's are better I reckon, better build quality, tighter bodies, better engines petrol and diesel, better suspension and ride, more comfy more room. My old 80 was set up on 35's and was a weapon, I still miss driving it off road.

That's very interesting coming from 4wd action, I just did a trip with the mag and the only car on the whole trip that had problems (and lots of them) was THEIR 80 series........

I would thought the Range Rover would get a mention,
Pioneered the comfy long travel coil suspension 4wd's that the 80 and GQ copied and made reliable  .

Mystery explained.

The 80 is a great truck, I am biased, however consider myself fortunate to own a solid one.

Not sure what the last thing 4wda printed was actually worth reading. No wonder roothy cut and run?!

Few months back around the time they launched 4wdsupacenter. The originally wanted to use his name. They may of been part of the reason he pulled the pin.
